AWARD: ADAM 2001

Special Award of the Jury / 1st Rank Africa Pavillion EXPO 2000, Hannover Architect / Designer: MAR Architects, Düsseldorf Construction Management: MAR Exhibition Management GmbH, Düsseldorf Client / Exhibitor: GTZ GmbH, Eschborn Stand construction: PICO Art International Pte. Ltd., Singapore FAMAB Comment: The presentation of Africa at the EXPO 2000 in Hannover was to showcase the dignity of the continent as visible ‘entity’. Individual aspects and the political situation of the continent had to be taken into special consideration, leading to the development of the concept away from a mere presentation to an integrated moderation between the specific desires and needs of the involved partners. The sensitive realization with its atmosphere of vitality, reflected by clear forms and lively colours removed from a simplicistic touristic portrayal, created an overlaying symbolism. Action zones and bazaars were positioned intelligently: centrally, but without interfering with the presentations of the individual nations. The Africa Pavilion came to be a major visitor magnet at the EXPO, proving the validity of the concept. The jury decided to give a special award to this Pavilion - difficult to compare with others - for the excellent realization and cooperation with the exhibiting nations.
